But at the time I was very angry, and only wanted to give her a piece of my mind. Later, after I had calmed down, I decided that if I gave everyone who misunderstands my child a piece of my mind, I might not have any mind left. You have to pick your battles, and in this case, I chose not to fight this battle. If I had it to do over again, maybe I would do it differently. Maybe I did make a mistake. In addition, a very interesting thing happened recently when I was finishing up this book. One day when I was at the local university for early registration, a young man stopped me and asked if I remembered him.
For some as yet unexplained reason, my child had a neurological disorder that caused him to display certain behaviors and impaired him socially and cognitively. We quickly put into place measures to help him in the 32 PARENT TO PARENT regular classroom, which included a para professional (aide) and had him pulled during the week for speech and occupational therapy. I also located places for me to get more information or help as needed. But once this was all set up and as the school years progressed, I felt like there was a gap in my education on autism.
I admit we do live in a small town, but when I typed in “autism” on the card catalog, only one book came up. I’m afraid I don’t remember the title, or the author, but I do remember that the publication date was 1973. The director of special services at the school had told me that because the definition of autism had changed so drastically, to stay away from any information published before 1990. Thus, in my first search, I came up empty handed. Where did I go from there? I went to the “big city” and stood in the aisle of a bookstore, unashamedly reading through books that I couldn’t afford to purchase.
